Time to Contact Your House Representative: Vote Coming Soon

Updated: May 4

If you wondered if you can do something to help get medical use of cannabis legal in Alabama, the answer is now YES!

We are urging all supporters to contact their Alabama House representative to #voteforcompassionact. SB46, the Compassion Act that will legalize medical marijuana, has been approved by the Senate and 2 House committees. We're in the home stretch. But there are over 100 House representatives. And we can't be sure how it will go on the House floor.

In the last few weeks, we've been busy speaking to news media and working to get it out of the House Health Committee, which was a success. We also had a surprise when an amendment was added to another bill (HB2) which would make delta-8-THC and delta-10-THC illegal. We scrambled to advocate against that.

Thanks to our work, other advocates, and some astute legislators, that amendment was removed from the bill, which is now on the governor's desk and will make a form of opioid a higher-level controlled substance in the state--the bill's original intent.

Is SB46 Exactly What We Want?

The answer is no. However, it's a big step in access in our state to the therapeutic and economic benefits of legalized cannabis in our state. In a democracy, progress is most often in small steps of evolution instead of revolution. Getting this bill passed is the beginning of our goal to allow any who will benefit from medical cannabis to have access to it.
